Group 1 to Group 5 is the official size vocabulary
The Defense Department sorts unmanned aircraft into five groups, from Group 1 hand-launched systems up to Group 5 large aircraft, using maximum takeoff weight together with normal operating altitude and airspeed.
Army University Press applies that framework in its published counter-UAS analysis, and it is the vocabulary that appears in requirements documents and briefings. Alongside it, readers will meet MALE and HALE — medium-altitude long-endurance and high-altitude long-endurance — which describe an aircraft's persistence profile rather than its weight. A MALE aircraft is built to stay over an area for long sorties at moderate altitude; a HALE aircraft trades that for wide-area coverage from much higher up, which changes the sensor set and the datalink architecture.
The distinction that matters for research is that group number is a physical classification, not a market segment. Two Group 3 aircraft can serve completely different customers and margin structures, and a Group 1 quadcopter and a Group 1 loitering munition are bought by different offices under different rules. Use the group to understand who is allowed to fly and approve the system; use the mission to understand who pays for it. When a company describes itself only by group number, that is a signal to go looking for the named mission and the named buyer.

The Defense Innovation Unit Blue UAS page says the cleared list is transitioning to the Defense Contract Management Agency. DIU also said the list had provided more than 39 certified systems and 165 components as of November 19, 2025.

What are the actual weight and altitude cutoffs for Group 1 through Group 5?
DoD's UAS Categorization Chart, published in Joint Publication 3-30 and reproduced in the Congressional Research Service's Defense Primer on uncrewed aircraft categories, sets the exact bands. Group 1 covers 0-20 lbs maximum gross takeoff weight, flying below 1,200 feet AGL at up to 100 knots (examples: RQ-11B Raven, Puma). Group 2 covers 21-55 lbs below 3,500 feet AGL at under 250 knots (ScanEagle, Aerosonde). Group 3 covers up to 1,320 lbs below 18,000 feet MSL at under 250 knots (RQ-7B Shadow). Group 4 covers aircraft over 1,320 lbs that still fly below 18,000 feet MSL, at any airspeed (MQ-1C Gray Eagle, MQ-8B Fire Scout). Group 5 covers aircraft over 1,320 lbs flying above 18,000 feet MSL, also at any airspeed (MQ-9 Reaper, RQ-4 Global Hawk).
