Covered List status is a gate, not a score

U.S. Covered List rules change how a buyer weighs new DJI models against a U.S.-origin alternative. The FCC UAS Covered List FAQs distinguish new foreign-produced UAS equipment authorization from models that were previously authorized.

That distinction is the first information-gain moment. “Covered List” is not a product-quality ranking and it is not shorthand for every owned aircraft becoming unusable. It is a market-access and authorization question with stated scope.

Skydio does not become automatically better because DJI faces that policy screen. Buyers still need to test mission fit, availability, integration, support, and contract terms. Policy changes the feasible set; it does not finish the selection.

Autonomy claims need workflow evidence

Skydio’s named autonomy position is important, but “autonomous” is not a single measurable promise. Ask which workflow is documented: obstacle-aware capture, repeatable inspection, mapping, remote review, or another defined task.

Evidence status matters. A manufacturer demonstration can establish that a feature is marketed. It does not establish the same outcome in a buyer’s site, weather, network, regulatory setting, or payload configuration. Request a mission-relevant demonstration with acceptance conditions.

The real tradeoff is operational. More automated capture can reduce repeat work in a controlled workflow, while a broad fleet ecosystem can reduce switching costs for teams already using compatible aircraft, batteries, software, and service channels.

Existing fleet continuity is separate from new procurement

A replacement decision is not always a new-procurement decision. A fleet owner may care about continued support, spares, software compatibility, and the authorization status of a specific already-owned model. Those questions should not be collapsed into a claim about every future model.

The FCC FAQ explains the difference between previously authorized devices and new foreign-produced models. Buyers should preserve model numbers, authorization records, and contract dates in their review file rather than rely on a social-media interpretation of a “ban.”

For a new request for proposal, write the policy condition explicitly. For an installed fleet, write the continuity condition explicitly. The two screens can lead to different shortlists even when the mission is identical.

Use a buyer screen, not a brand vote

Each can be true or false independently. Keep source dates beside each claim so an old list entry or launch announcement does not silently become a current market conclusion.

For a formal evaluation, define the mission outcome before selecting a platform. Record the required output, acceptable evidence, operational limits, owner for integration, and exit condition. That process produces a more useful DJI-versus-Skydio decision than a generic ranking and makes the eventual choice auditable when requirements change.
