USV Squadron ONE turned demonstration into a standing command

Unmanned Surface Vessel Squadron ONE is U.S. Pacific Fleet's first dedicated USV command, stood up in 2022 to operate and train on medium and large surface drones rather than treat each vessel as a one-off test article.

The squadron's assigned vessels, Mariner, Ranger, Seahawk, and Sea Hunter, recently completed the Navy's first overseas USV deployment to the Indo-Pacific. That detail matters more than the ship names: a deployment means sustainment, maintenance, and a real operating tempo, not a single controlled demonstration in home waters. Corsair shows the attritable-mass playbook in production

Saronic's Corsair is a 24-foot, diesel-powered autonomous surface vessel built to carry roughly 1,000 pounds over 1,000 nautical miles at more than 35 knots, and it is the clearest public example of the Pentagon's attritable-mass approach reaching a real production contract.

Naval Sea Systems Command signed a roughly $392 million Other Transaction agreement with Saronic in 2025 to move Corsair from prototype to production, a deal Secretary of the Navy John Phelan publicly framed as a new benchmark for procurement speed. The information-gain point for investors is the contract vehicle itself: an Other Transaction agreement moves faster than a traditional Federal Acquisition Regulation contract precisely because it trades some of the usual cost-reporting detail for speed, so a fast OTA award is evidence of procurement urgency, not proof of a company's long-run margin profile. Corsair traces back to the Pentagon's Replicator initiative, which aims to field large numbers of low-cost autonomous systems, and that lineage is the reason its unit economics matter more than its top speed.

Underwater systems stay an exquisite, low-volume business

Extra-large underwater vehicles sit at the opposite end of the cost curve from a vessel like Corsair, closer to submarine-building economics than to munitions economics.

Boeing's Orca XLUUV is a long-endurance uncrewed submarine the Navy has already accepted for testing, while DARPA's Manta Ray is an earlier-stage undersea glider program still proving out low-power, long-duration autonomy. Both move on a program timeline measured in years, with a handful of hulls rather than a production line, which is the opposite procurement shape from the fast, high-volume Corsair contract above. The practical research consequence is that a headline pairing "naval drone" with a dollar figure needs to be read against which of these two shapes it describes. A production award sized like Corsair's signals near-term manufacturing revenue and a repeatable buy. A milestone announcement for Orca or Manta Ray signals a program still proving the underlying technology, where the payoff, if it comes, is years further out and concentrated in a single prime contractor's backlog rather than spread across a supplier base.

"Combat strike" is a mission role, not a separate product line

A surface drone built for detection and one built to deliver a strike effect can be the same hull with a different payload, which is the point Saronic makes when it describes Corsair as spanning maritime domain awareness through kinetic and non-kinetic effects.

That framing matters for research because it means the investable question is rarely "does this company build a weapon," and almost always "what payload and control architecture does the buyer certify for this hull, and under what authority." A sensor-only USV and a strike-capable USV can share the same production line, the same autonomy stack, and the same Navy program office, which is very different from crewed shipbuilding, where an armed vessel and an unarmed one are usually built to entirely different specifications from the keel up. Investors comparing USV builders should ask whether a company's platform is modular enough to serve both roles, since that flexibility is closer to the real product than any single mission label.

  • Public exposure: mostly indirect, through primes such as Boeing and Northrop Grumman or through private companies such as Saronic that reach public markets, if at all, through a future listing or acquisition.
